Finding Order in the Chaos (what 2020 has taught me)

Updated: Jul 7, 2021

Always be willing to bet on yourself...or whatever Beyonce' said...

It been a while! I have taken a much needed hiatus from blogging to recalibrate in the midst of transition and focus my attentions on some other fun projects!

As the year comes to a close, I have found myself deeply reflective and introspective. Acknowledging newly developed aspects of my perspective on life and myself. If I had to define this year, unpredictably devastating would be a gross oversimplification.

My brain can't even fully fathom the sheer magnitude of death and loss many in this country have faced. There is no need to recap because you were there and if you are reading this and have experienced great loss during this year my heart and prayers go out to you and your loved ones.

I have found, from personal experiences, that some of the lowest points in my life have been breeding grounds for some of the greatest blessings I currently reap. This year is no different. I can't wait to bear witness to the fruit of the strength and endurance we have all had to exhibit during this very difficult and inconvenient time.

With that said here are just four simple take-aways from this year that are shaping my mindset as I enter into 2021:

1. God is STILL good in the midst of global chaos + disfunction:

This year might have been a complete cluster for many in this country but, God never needs a perfect situation to move miraculously, he just needs your full belief. In fact he is at his best when are at our worst. No matter the circumstances there is no limit to his glory. His grace is and always will be sufficient and renews daily. When it doesn't make sense, know that God is working.

2. Strength starts from within: Being inside has allowed a little more time to face ourselves and whatever has been distracting us, hone in on stillness, and address who has been in front of us all along, ourselves. Whether we were enjoying being alone, leaning into the loneliness, dueling with loss of a loved one while finding ourselves, or operating a little too close for comfort with those we cohabitate with, we've all to some degree had to focus on cultivating and watering our own grass.

3. "Always be willing to bet on yourself" or whatever Beyoncé said: I was forced to relinquish a level of control that I never had before and it has been most freeing. Not being overly concerned about planning for the future but receiving life as it comes, while also steering my intentions towards the things I would like to achieve has been a game changer. It has forced me into a posture to receive daily creativity, which has proven to be much more resilient and effective than having a laundry list of plans that are of no use in the event of uncertainty.

4. Don’t fall pray to the "Shoulds": At the onset of quarantine there were a lot of things I felt like I "should" have been doing with my new found time. Now being a full time student there was this internal pressure to work in addition to my class load, interning and assistantship. However, allowing myself permission to just be in the moment of this current journey has provided the creative bandwidth to work on projects that I am not only passionate about but will also be profitable in the future.

Whatever 2020 has been like for you, at minimum, I hope it is nothing short of a launching pad for a prosperous 2021 for you and all that aspire to achieve!
